A deep sea tee for calm nights, long lines and the kind of thing you count rather than look at.
A calm night aboard the Constance, spring 1888, with a thin moon and no wind to speak of. At 2.50 a.m. the lead went down past fifty fathoms. Some way below it there were lights: nine of them, small, keeping their distance from one another. The Sounding Party's instructions say not to lower a lamp over the side, so nobody did. A cross-section of the sea: a two-masted ship under a crescent moon, a lead line marked 10 to 50, and nine moon-gold lights far below.
