No Bottom Found – Victorian Nautical Chart T-Shirt
A Victorian nautical chart tee for anyone who likes an old map with something wrong in it. The soundings all agree, except one.
Soundings from the Constance, spring 1888, in open North Sea where the chart promises shallows. Every figure agreed with the chart except one. At that mark Mr Hollin paid out the whole line and the lead never touched. The depth contours were drawn in afterwards from his figures. Nobody has managed to make them lie straight. A torn fragment of an invented chart, with italic soundings in fathoms, a quarter compass rose and contours that loop in to one small moon-gold circle marked no bottom.
